12/12/2009 A stray Westie, number A028120, is picked up in Panama City, Florida and taken to Bay County Animal Control. He is nearly void of hair and is infested with fleas.
12/14/2009 Nancy in Connecticut sees an ad for number A028120 on Pet Harbor. She notifies Joan in Tampa, a one-person rescue. Joan goes to work. 12/15/2009 Joan learns that two applicants for number A028120 didn’t pan out. He is scheduled for euthanasia due to his allergies. 12/16/2009 Three rescue groups pass on number A028120, deeming him unadoptable, too hard to place, or too far to drive to. Joan stays on task, convincing BCAC not to euthanize. They agree contingent on daily updates and measurable progress toward adoption. The shelter’s policy prohibits them from treating since a rescue group is involved. 12/17/2009 Joan names number A028120 “Panama Jack”. A foster home for Jack is located in Jacksonville, and the director of BCAC agrees to drive him there. At the last minute, the foster rescinds the offer. Jack is stuck. 12/19/2009 Marie, a volunteer for the Colonel Potter network, learns about Jack and picks him up from the shelter. She will provide a temporary foster home while on Christmas break from work. Throughout the day, Jack’s breathing becomes labored and he has nasal discharge. He is obviously feeling bad and declines food. At 6 PM, Jack goes to the emergency room. He is diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and pneumonia. Also, the doctor hears a heart murmur and suspects heartworms. Jack must spend the night in the ER on an IV drip. 12/20/2009 Jack makes remarkable progress through the night and is discharged with a prescription for Clavamox. 12/24/2009 Jack’s health has declined again since his stay at the ER and he is listless and refusing food and treats. Jack goes back to the vet and has several tests. He is found to be allergic to Clavamox. He is also confirmed positive for heartworms. A regimen of injected penicillin is begun and Jack bounces back again. He demonstrates the Westie fortitude and a strong will to live. Jack is prescribed Doxycycline and Ketoconazole and continues to improve. His hair is beginning to grow back. Merry Christmas!
1/7/2010 Jack is on the mend and his temporary foster mom is back to work from Christmas vacation. She must leave on assignment and an adopter or long-term foster is critically needed. E-mail alerts go out and more rescue groups are contacted. There is no one to care for Jack. 1/12/2010 A person who seems ideal as a foster, decides that she can’t commit to Jack’s long-term care. Time is running out. Joan feels isolated and alone and thinks of pulling out of rescue. Members of Westie Rescue of North Texas have been following Jack’s story and offer to assist. After more phone calls and e-mails, transportation for Jack can’t be found farther west than Alabama. 1/17/2010 Janie from Westie rescue of Austin sees Jack’s story. She has a friend in Alabama whom she is planning to visit. After a couple of short phone calls, Jack has a ride back to Texas. He continues to improve and work on his coiffure. 2/6/2010 Marie and Jack meet Janie in Alabama. Panama Jack is on his way to Texas! Janie and Jack drive nine hours and meet WRNT members in east Texas. A few short hours later, Jack greets some resident little white dogs, has dinner, and is snuggled in bed like he runs the house. Heartworm treatments begin as soon as possible and there is one more Happy Tail!
03/27/2010 Jack has finished his final series of heartworm treatments and is adopted! We look at the pictures and can't believe how far he has come. We also wonder if he's adjusting well to having all those toys and naps.
